What's inside each download
- Foundations CSV — one row per foundation: name, EIN, state, total giving, giving to this cause, application details as stated on its own tax form, and example grants.
- Grants CSV — the individual grant line items: recipient, amount, stated purpose.
- Plain-language guide — a 20-minute workflow for turning the file into a shortlist of likely funders.
Where the data comes from
The IRS publishes every electronically-filed Form 990-PF — the annual return each private foundation must file — as public bulk data. We extract the grant sections, keep organization-level grants only (grants to private individuals, like named scholarship students, are excluded by design), validate every EIN, and ship it as files you actually own. Data edition: 2026-09-04. Refreshed quarterly as the IRS publishes new filings.
